Formed in 1989 with the support of Shaftesbury Upper School the dance band includes students from local schools, keen adults and both professional and semi-professional musicians. Swing Bin & The Liners then changed its name in 2002 to the Shaftesbury Swing Band. At full strength the band includes 4 trumpets, 5 Saxophones, 4 Trombones plus a  Rhythm section of Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Piano & Drums. The Band aims to gig with 14 or more players.

 

If you wish to join:  

You will need to be at least grade 5 and be a good sight reader. We aim for about a 50% spilt of adults and students in all sections with students encouraged to take the solo’s and the principle parts. Students are generally in the 14 to 18 age range.

 

The aim is to gig about once a month during term time, these are normally evening dances on Saturday nights. Trips abroad are during the summer holidays and last about 10 days.

 

Style of Music they play

The band has a wide repertoire of music to suit all age groups. They include classic Glen Miller Big Band tunes plus some Rock N Roll and pop tunes & Funk.

Areas & Towns will they travel to

Shaftesbury Swing Band play across Dorset centered on the Blackmore Vale town of Shaftesbury. They play as far south as Blandford Forum and to west as Sherborne, to the north limited by Wincanton & Mere and to the east by Salisbury.

 

Type of events they normally play

Both public and private functions particularly PTA dances, Fetes, charity events especially those aimed at the young. The band has offered many students the chance to develop their talents and several have gone on to study music at college and follow professional careers. The Band every few years tours abroad and during its summer tour of Spain in 1999 took part in the San Sebastian Jazz festival, sharing the billing with Herbie Hancock and Van MorrisonIn 2003 they went to Belgium. They don’t Gig over the Summer and limit the number of gigs per term so book early.
